YOU WILL NEED ;
- A notepad
- A USB Memory Stick
- An internet connection (to download iTunes on the new PC)
PREPARATIONS ;
On the computer you want to transfer the music from;
- Find out which folders on your computer your music is in.
- Preferrably move all your music to the same folder. This might be "My Music" or anywhere. This will take some time!
- Make sure you tell itunes you have moved your music to a different folder.
- If you have several hard drives, make a note of the drive letter of the drive the music is stored on.
THE MAIN BIT; PART ONE (on the old PC)
- Open your "My Music" / "Music" folder. It can often be found on the Start Menu.
- Look for the folder called iTunes. You might have to scroll through a lot of other music files/folders if you have a lot of music in this folder.
- When you open the folder, its contents will look something like the below screenshot;
- ALL of these files & folders need to be copied to your memory stick, so put it in your computer and copy them over.
Now, before we get ahead of ourselves - you need to transfer all your music files from your old computer to your new one. An external hard drive will come in handy for that.
THE MAIN BIT; PART TWO (on the new PC)
VERY IMPORTANT - For this to work, you must put all your music in the same place it was on your old PC! Otherwise, iTunes will get very confused! So make sure it's in the same folder on your new PC as it was on the old PC.
ALSO VERY IMPORTANT - Do the next steps BEFORE INSTALLING ITUNES ON YOUR NEW COMPUTER
- Pop in your Memory stick.
- Open it and copy all the iTunes folders that you just got from the old PC
- Open your "My Music" / "Music" folder. It can often be found on the Start Menu.
- Paste ALL the iTunes files & folders from your Memory Stick into the My Music / Music folder.
- Download iTunes
- Install iTunes. When you reach the first time setup, remove the ticks from the below options.
- Remove the ticks in the above check boxes, and click Next.
- Finish the iTunes setup, and start iTunes for the first time.
